Ares 2 - simple install process please

Hi All,

Having watched a little youtube clip of what could be done using Ares 2, I decided to find out how to install it on my windows 8 computer.

I would appreciate a step by step instruction on installing Ares 2. All I see are problems with nodes and npm install ares-ide etc but no step by step guide on installing, setting folders, projects folders and setting up accounts to phonegap build or dropbox or having it run locally.

In particular a demo of the code completion capability of Ares with Enyo 2 made me think maybe I should give it a try.

The Ares section does not really give a simple step by step.

Any help appreciated

  • Agreed. Iv'e been following Ares 2 from the beginning and I found that it used to be more error free to get it up and running. Lately I can't get it to install at all using Windows 7. Iv'e only had success lately with OSX. (Latest version seems improved, I.E you no longer have to update the submodules for Enyo but the documentation has become more cumbersome! in it all)

Saying that. It's actually pretty easy to get it running if everything works.

    1) install NodeJS 0.8.21 (If you already have a later version installed then install NVM so you can switch versions. To find out your nodejs version type node -v from the console window.)

    2) In the console. Type "npm -d install ares-ide" from the directory where you want it installed to. You will possibly see warnings during install. But that's ok. (for reference, npm is a package manager program that comes pre-packaged with nodejs allowing you to install nodejs programs, plugins)

    3) from your directory where you installed. Navigate to /node_modules/ares-ide and type "node ide.js"

    - You should see a message in the console telling you the location to Ares. Navigate to this location from a browser window. Keep the console window open and node running the entire time.

There are even steps to get it running on a web server , but I found web server access to Ares to be very very buggy. I.E text wouldn't type correctly and popups wouldn't close.

  • Thanks egfx,

I finally managed to get it running on windows 7 following your steps. Had to uninstall my later version of nodejs then re-install version 0.8.

Will experiment with imports, accounts etc.

    Your tips very much appreciated.

I think the problem is that I downloaded the clone that works, so I want to know which is the clone taken from github

Trying to install on a Win7 Pro 64 system.

I followed egfx's instructions upthread, managed to work thru some install errors, and got a seemingly successful result.
    npm info postinstall ares-ide@0.2.5
    ares-ide@0.2.5 node_modules\ares-ide
    npm info ok
When I navigate to /node_modules/ares-ide and type "node ide.js", I get this error info :
    C:\ares\node_modules\ares-ide>node ide.js

Woops install the 32 bit version of node ! ( node should be in C:\Program Files (x86) ) I have run in to this with more then Ares a 32 bit browser need 32 bit programs. you on the right track i would uninstall all node and Ares then reinstall nodejs 32bit and reinstall Ares ( the whole folder)

  • Thanks John, trying that pathway out ....

Removed all node and ares stuff. Scoured Windows registry to ensure cleanth. Switched to 32 bit version of node, but the installation process still puked over a cache setup issue, per the console messages shown below.

Anyone have ideas ?? Anyone on the Enyo/Ares team have responsibility for installation processes/issues ??

  • Okay. Got Ares installed. Some notes :

    1. 64-bit Node is just fine

    2. That npm bug noted above cuts in when your Windows system cache is on a drive other than where you're putting Ares. I was installing Ares on C, and my cache was on F, and thus I hit the bug.

    3. The fixes for that npm bug, which I tweaked my Node install with, are to be found here : https://github.com/isaacs/npm/commit/966373fad8d741637f9744882bde9f6e94000865
